Artist's Comments

One of the many ways of cutting an object from the background is the often-feared pen tool. This tutorial is supposed to show you how to use it and what you can actually do with it.

I hope you'll find this useful. Feedback is more than welcome, as always

Show me if you use this in a deviation, too, I am always curious!

:pointr: If you're a stocker/manipper, too, I'd love to trade some exclusive stock with you

I agree this is the best way to cut something out, perhaps its not the fastest way but the outcome has quality far superior to other methods.

great tip love it, I've been looking for an accurate way to do this without the magnetic lasso

I never actually used the pen tool, but I'm certainly going to try it now! :D

And I'm glad you mentioned that there is no one right way. ^^

Oh wow, thank you for this! The pen tool is the Master to my Doctor. Maybe now I'll have more success. The technique I've been using is annoying and time consuming. I select with lasso, use a layer mask, then comes the painstaking work of removing the pixels I don't want. D:

Thank you!!!!!!

That's an interesting take. I wasn't even aware paths could be saved in the jpeg itself. I knew it could be done with guides. NO idea about the paths. Interesting.

Personally, when I sit down to a large project, I tend to save all the separately manipulated images to their own little PSDs. (At least until I'm done with everything.) While I'll grant you it doesn't save much space, it's not permanent disc space, so I've never really cried over it.

Still, interesting to know, though!
