Walkthrough - The Cathedral by kuschelirmel-stock Walkthrough - The Cathedral by kuschelirmel-stock
This is a Walkthrough for my image The Cathedral which can be found at my Art Account.

Please note: this is a walkthrough - it's not meant to teach you how to reproduce the image. It's meant to show you how I work, which techniques I use, what my thinking process was and ultimately how I arrived at the end result. I want to help you use Photoshop to make your visions come to life, not to hold your hand while you do nothing but repeat the steps. I hope you can appreciate and respect the difference!

However I've recently come to the conclusion that trying to copy some aspects or the mood of a piece is not always to be condemned. This basically means that if you want to try and recreate it, you're welcome to. Don't expect me to help you out when you get stuck though, because I believe that the merit in trying to copy something is to gain insights into techniques that can later be used to create something new and unique. Giving you step-by-step instructions would negate that pretty much completely. So, if you recreate it, give credit where credit is due.
:bulletblue: In any case, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me see what you've created - I'm curious like that.
:bulletblue: Comments & Feedback always welcome

I'm glad you like it, though I have to point out one thing: this is not meant to be a step by step so you can recreate the same image, it's meant to teach techniques that you can use for your own ideas. I thought I had mentioned this in the intro.

thank you - it's mostly practice I guess and some technical stuff like using masks and adjustment layers, most is explained in my tutorials (or I try to explain anyway ^^;)

sure.

put some random blobs of paint on a new layer, then use the Motion Blur Filter (filters > motion blur) to blur them at an angle. put on a blend mode like overlay or colour dodge (you may need to experiment with those as well as the colour of the paint) and you're good to go :aww: you can change the colour of the rays afterwards using the hue/saturation dialogue (Ctrl+U) which is usually easier than trying to pick the right colour from the start

god, I'm tired... you know, on Part 2: Welcome to the jungle - I actually googled "parrotonto" thinking it was one of the plants before I realized it was a typo on your part :shakefist:

gonna reread the part on the plants when I'm more awake. I refuse to believe you used masks to cut them.... they look so crispy and perfect <.<

parrotonto?! LOL I must've been writing before coffee :D

and no, I didn't exactly cut the plants... they're 3d renders, pngs - I just used that "decontaminate colours" feature to get rid of the whiteish borders those tend to have...

I am very used to using fancy textures that others or that I have made to create most of my work instead of using different stock images like the ones you've used in this tutorial to create something totally new and lovely. I've gotten a better idea of how to expand my creativity and would like to try something like this in the near future with having the importance of colour scheme and composition in mind that I've learned here.

The fact that you've sketched the vines and added your own highlights has also given me different ideas also, since I've never thought of creating my own simple, but effective additions to my creations.
